What makes the sisters of the yam Writing Society different from other writing organizations?
Here, participants are encouraged to show up honestly, without pressure to perform or produce. We intentionally remove expectations that often accompany creative spaces, making room for reflection, self-evaluation, and personal growth. Through writing, participants interrogate their beliefs, reconnect with their power as storytellers, and deepen their relationships with themselves and their community.
Our foundational programming includes:
- Sweet Communion Write-Ins – communal writing spaces grounded in presence and care
- Tongues of Fire Workshops – writing workshops focused on voice, craft, and reclamation
- Seeking After Truth – public speaking, personal narrative, and storytelling as truth-telling
- Dreaming Ourselves Dark and Deep- half-day immersive gatherings centered around cultural grounding, extended creative time, and collective restoration
We prioritize privacy through device-use agreements, monitored events, and intentional boundaries. Our presence in the world reflects this ethos—eclectic, creative, and a little mysterious—centering collective imagery over individual exposure and honoring Black cultural storytelling traditions.
